Fence Repair in Annapolis, MD
Our Annapolis crew works on the fences that live next to the water: wood privacy runs on creek lots, aluminum around pools, vinyl that takes the wind off the Bay, and gates that quit closing. We find the part that failed and fix that part. When a fence is past saving, we replace it, build new and stain it.

Fixing the Failed Part on Annapolis Fences
Annapolis has fences of every age on one street. A brick rowhouse downtown may have a short board fence closing in a courtyard. A 1950s cottage in Eastport has a picket line somebody has patched for decades. A house in Annapolis Neck or out toward Heritage Harbour has a newer vinyl or aluminum run that met its first real storm. Different fences, but they fail the same way: one piece at a time.
The usual first failure is a post. Wood posts soften right at the soil line, where the ground stays wet and air never dries them out. Next come the fasteners. Plain steel nails and screws rust in the salt air, bleed black streaks down the boards, and let pickets and rails slip. After that a rail cracks at its end, and every picket on it drops.
Each of those is a part we can swap. We cut out the bad post and set a new one, replace or sister the split rail, and refasten with stainless or hot-dipped galvanized screws so the rust cycle does not restart. That is the core of what The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis does. If post after post moves when we push on it, we say so plainly and show you what we found, so a replacement decision rests on the fence and not a guess.

Fence Staining detailsSalt Air, High Water and Bay Wind
Almost every Annapolis address is close to tidal water. The Severn, South, Magothy, Rhode and West rivers, plus creeks like Spa, Back, Weems and Whitehall, put brackish air over most yards in the area. That air is hard on anything steel. Hinges, latches, chain link ties and the screws holding a wood fence together rust first, usually long before the boards are done.
The ground is the second problem. Creek and waterfront lots often sit on a high water table, and the soil stays soft and wet after rain. A post set in that ground rots faster at grade and can lean when the soil gives up its grip. Tidal flooding pushes salt water into the same soil and leaves salt behind when it drains.
Then there is wind. Nor'easters and the remains of tropical storms drive straight off the Bay and up the rivers, and a solid privacy fence on an open shoreline acts like a sail.
- Rust streaks running down from hinges and screw heads
- Posts that rock at grade after a wet week or a high tide
- Panels pushed out of plumb along the side facing open water
- Chain link ties and tension bands rusted thin or snapped
We build repairs to match that exposure: stainless or hot-dipped galvanized hardware, and posts on a gravel base with crowned concrete so water runs off.

From the first call to a fence that stands straight
Send the address and a photo
Call or use the form with your address and what went wrong. A close shot of the damage and a wide shot of the whole run let us load the right posts, rails and hardware.
We walk the whole fence
Our Annapolis crew tests every post at grade, checks the hardware for salt corrosion, and swings each gate, because the real failure is often a few posts from the obvious one.
Approvals and a straight plan
You hear what failed and why, plus what we recommend. We confirm historic district, permit, Critical Area and association requirements for the address before work starts.
Marked, built, hauled away
Miss Utility marks lines before any digging. Posts go on gravel with crowned concrete, hardware is stainless or galvanized, and old boards and footings leave with us.
Gates, Storm Repairs, Replacement, New Fences and Stain
Repair is the specialty, and our Annapolis crew also handles everything else a fence needs on wood, vinyl, aluminum and chain link.
Gates get the most wear. A gate hangs off one post, gets swung every day, and carries its own weight on two hinges. Near the water those hinges and latches corrode, the hinge post loosens in soft soil, and the frame racks until the latch side drags. We fix the post first, square and brace the frame, then hang it on stainless or galvanized hardware.
After a nor'easter or a summer squall, our storm damage work starts with securing the opening, especially where a dog, a pool or the water itself needs to be closed off. Then we photograph the damage and rebuild what the storm actually broke.
Replacement and new installation use the same post detail as our repairs: a gravel base for drainage and concrete crowned above grade. Aluminum is the common choice around pools and on open water views, vinyl for low-upkeep privacy, wood for character, and chain link for dogs and big South County lots. Staining protects wood once it has dried enough to take the finish, which matters on the new boards of a fresh repair.

Our 20-Mile Area Around the Annapolis Shop
The service area is a 20-mile circle around our Annapolis shop off Chinquapin Round Road, near Parole. That circle takes in every corner of Annapolis: downtown and Murray Hill, Eastport, West Annapolis, Admiral Heights, Germantown, and the waterfront communities of Annapolis Neck such as Hillsmere, Bay Ridge and Annapolis Roads.
Across the Severn is the Broadneck peninsula: Arnold, Cape St. Claire, Severna Park and Gibson Island, with wooded lots on the Magothy and the Severn and a lot of community beach associations. South County runs down MD-2 and out the necks: Edgewater, Riva, Mayo, Shady Side, Galesville, Churchton, Deale, Tracys Landing and Harwood, where lots get bigger, the woods get thicker, and deer and open-water wind are part of every fence plan.
Over the Bay Bridge, Kent Island is in Queen Anne's County, from Stevensville and Chester to Grasonville and Queenstown past Kent Narrows. The island is low and flat, so wind and high water shape the work, and The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis covers that side. To the south, north Calvert County takes in Dunkirk and Owings along MD-4 and the Bay towns reached by MD-260, which The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis serves on its own page. If your street sits near the edge, send the address and we will confirm it is inside the circle.
Historic District, Critical Area and Association Checks
Fence work around Annapolis often involves more than one set of approvals, and they depend on exactly where the house sits. Downtown, Murray Hill and parts of Eastport fall inside the City of Annapolis Historic District, which has its own Historic Preservation Commission. Many properties on the creeks and the Bay sit within the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, the land within 1,000 feet of tidal water, which carries its own approvals. A house inside city limits deals with the city, while one in Arnold or Edgewater deals with Anne Arundel County. Kent Island answers to Queen Anne's County, and north Calvert to Calvert County.
On top of that, many neighborhoods here have a community association that owns a beach, a pier or a boat ramp and keeps standards for fence style, height and color.
We do not guess at any of this. Before work starts, we confirm the historic district, city or county permit, Critical Area and HOA requirements for your address. A straight repair that puts a fence back the way it was is often a different question from a taller replacement on a new line, so tell us the full scope early. If the association has a written standard or an approval form, send it, and we will build to it.

Fence questions we hear most
Do you go across the Bay Bridge to Kent Island and down into north Calvert County?
Yes, our Annapolis crew goes across the Bay Bridge to Kent Island and down into north Calvert County, because both sit inside the 20-mile circle around our Annapolis shop. On Kent Island that covers Stevensville, Chester and the communities toward Kent Narrows, plus Grasonville and Queenstown on the other side of the narrows. In Calvert County it covers Dunkirk and Owings along MD-4 and the Bay towns of North Beach and Chesapeake Beach. Each county has its own permit office, so we confirm the requirements for a Queen Anne's or Calvert address separately from Anne Arundel. If your house is near the outer edge of that range, send the address and we will check it.
How do I find out if my yard is in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area before fence work?
To find out whether your yard is in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area before fence work, check the county or city mapping for your address, or let us look it up when we plan the job. The Critical Area covers land within 1,000 feet of tidal water, so many lots on the Severn, the South River, the Magothy and the creeks around Annapolis fall inside it, even when the water is not visible from the yard. Being in it can bring its own approvals, separate from a standard permit or association approval. Settlement papers and plats sometimes note it as well. We confirm the Critical Area status of the address before any posts go in the ground.
Tidal flooding left salt water standing along my fence. Does the whole fence need to be replaced?
No, a fence that sat in salt water from tidal flooding usually does not need full replacement; most of the time only the posts and hardware that stayed wet the longest need attention. Salt water soaks the wood at grade and leaves salt behind when it drains, which speeds up rot and rust at the base. Once the water is gone, push on each post along the low side. Posts that move at the ground are candidates for replacement. Look at hinges, latches and screws for fresh orange rust. Rinsing the lower boards with fresh water helps. Vinyl and aluminum panels usually survive, though their steel hardware may not.
Will a fence keep deer out of my yard in South County or on the Broadneck peninsula?
A fence can keep deer out of a yard in South County or on the Broadneck peninsula if it is tall enough that deer cannot clear it, but a standard privacy or picket fence usually is not. Deer jump a typical four-foot fence easily, and they will push through gaps under a gate or around a corner post. Taller fences and gates that close tight to the ground work far better. Height is where the limits come in. County rules, historic district guidance and community associations can all restrict how tall a fence may be, so we confirm what is allowed for your address before we plan a deer fence.
Our neighborhood has a community association with a beach and pier. Can you build to its fence standards?
Yes, we build to a community association's fence standards in neighborhoods with a beach and pier, as long as we have the written rules or the approval form before work begins. Many associations around Annapolis, on the Broadneck peninsula and in South County set fence style, height, color and placement, and some ask for a drawing or material sample with the application. Send us the standards and any approval letter you have. We match the style, keep the fence on the approved line, and use materials the association accepts. If the rules require approval before any change, we wait for that sign-off and then schedule the work.
Can you fix a fence that runs down to a bulkhead or ends at the water?
Yes, we can fix a fence that runs down to a bulkhead or ends at the water, though the last few posts nearest the shoreline usually need a different plan than the rest. Ground near a bulkhead is often soft, wet, or full of old fill and rock, and digging too close can disturb the bulkhead itself. We look at where the bulkhead tiebacks and the shoreline are before deciding where the final post goes. The end posts take the most wind and spray, so they get stainless or hot-dipped galvanized hardware. Because these lots are usually in the Critical Area, we confirm approvals for the address before work starts.
Why does my black aluminum fence near the water have white powder or bubbling paint?
White powder or bubbling paint on a black aluminum fence near the water means salt air has reached the bare metal under the coating, usually at a scratch, a cut end or a fastener. Aluminum does not rust like steel, but where the powder coat is broken it oxidizes into a chalky white residue, and that can creep under the coating and lift it into bubbles. Steel screws touching the aluminum make it worse. Small spots can be cleaned and touched up. Panels with widespread blistering, or posts loose at the base, are better replaced. We use compatible stainless fasteners so new hardware does not start the problem again.
My driveway gate on a long South County lot drags. Can you fix it without a new gate?
Yes, a dragging driveway gate on a long South County lot can usually be fixed without buying a new gate, because the problem is most often the hinge post or the hardware rather than the gate itself. A wide gate puts heavy leverage on its hinge post, and in the soft ground common around Edgewater, Shady Side and Deale that post slowly tips. Once it moves, the latch end drops and drags. We reset or replace the hinge post deeper on a gravel base, square the frame with a brace or turnbuckle, and rehang it on heavier stainless or galvanized hinges. A gate frame that is rotted through is the exception.
Can your crew get into gated communities like Gibson Island?
Yes, our crew can work in gated communities like Gibson Island, as long as access is arranged through the homeowner and the community before the scheduled day. Private and gated neighborhoods often have their own entry procedures, contractor rules or work-hour limits, and some require the owner to register the visit in advance. Tell us when you reach out if your street is behind a gate, who handles contractor access, and whether trucks or trailers have restrictions on the roads. We schedule around those rules and bring the crew in on the arranged day. The same goes for any association approval the fence itself needs first.
Do I need Miss Utility to mark my Annapolis yard before fence posts are replaced?
Yes, Miss Utility marking is needed before fence posts are replaced in an Annapolis yard, because any new post hole means digging, and buried lines can run anywhere. Maryland requires a locate request before excavation, and the utilities then mark their public lines with paint or flags. We place that request as part of the job so the marks are down before the crew digs. Private lines are not marked by the utilities, including some irrigation, landscape lighting, pool equipment and lines to a dock or shed, so point those out if you know where they run. Repairs that only replace pickets, rails or hardware do not involve digging.
