Boat Trailers, Wide Gates and Backyard Storage
A lot of Arnold backyards double as boat storage. Between the Severn, the Magothy and the creeks off both, plenty of households keep a skiff, a jon boat or a stack of kayaks on a trailer behind the fence, and that means a wide double gate somewhere on the line.
Wide gates fail in predictable ways. Each leaf is heavy, so the hinge posts lean in toward the opening and the two leaves stop meeting in the middle. The drop rod that holds the fixed leaf wears its hole in the driveway into a crater, so the leaf wanders. Backing a trailer through a tight opening clips the gate posts, and a cracked post at grade hides under the grass until the gate drops.
We reset or replace the hinge posts in deeper footings, give each leaf a diagonal brace that rises from its hinge side, and set a fresh drop rod receiver in concrete. If the opening is too tight for the trailer you have now, we widen it while we are there so the posts stop taking hits.
Tall Poplars, Oaks and the Storm Calls They Bring
Arnold has some of the heaviest tree cover on the Broadneck. Tulip poplars and oaks run along nearly every back lot line, and summer thunderstorms and winter ice bring their limbs down onto fences. A single heavy limb can flatten two sections and snap the post between them.
Do not pull a fallen limb off a fence by yourself if the panel is bent under load. The rails can spring back hard when the weight comes off.
Once the wood is off, we pull the broken boards and rails, dig out the snapped posts and their old concrete, and set new posts plumb. Then we rebuild the panels to match the board pattern and height of the rest of the line. We push-test the posts on each side too, because a limb strike often cracks the neighbors without dropping them. For storm work, The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis can secure the opening right away and rebuild properly once the debris is gone.

Call (443) 332-2662Two Rivers, Two Kinds of Waterfront
Arnold's waterfront is split between two rivers, and they treat fences differently. On the Severn side, neighborhoods like Pines on the Severn sit on high wooded banks above the river. On the Magothy side, around Ulmstead and the Little Magothy, lots run lower and flatter toward the creeks.
On a bluff lot, the risk is the edge. Runoff from the lawn heads for the bank, and if the fence line follows that path, soil washes out from under the posts nearest the drop. Posts set close to the edge lean toward the water as the bank wears back. We keep new posts back from the edge, set the downhill ones deeper, and steer the line so water crosses it instead of running along it.
On the low creek lots, the problem is wet ground and salt air. Posts soften at grade and plain steel hardware rusts. Either way, waterfront Arnold lots may sit in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, and before any new line is staked we check that, plus county permit and HOA rules, for your specific lot.
Chain Link That Came With the House
Arnold grew fast once Route 50 and the Bay Bridge opened up the Broadneck, and many homes off Arnold Road and Bay Dale Drive still have the chain link fence that went up when the house was new. Much of it can be saved.
Old chain link wears out in a set order. The top rail rusts first at the sleeves where two lengths join. The wire ties holding the fabric to the rail snap. The tension bands at the end posts loosen, and the fabric sags between posts and bellies out at the bottom where dogs push on it.
When the posts are still solid at the ground, we swap the rusted top rail for new galvanized lengths, renew every tie and band, and pull the fabric taut with a come-along. Bent fabric from a fallen limb gets spliced. If the posts are rusted through at grade, or you want privacy now, we talk about replacing the line with wood or vinyl on the same layout.

Corner Lots Off College Parkway and St. Margarets Road
Arnold has plenty of corner lots in the neighborhoods that branch off College Parkway and St. Margarets Road, and a fence on a corner lot is seen from two streets. That changes a few decisions.
The finished side should face out on both street sides, which means the rails and posts sit on the yard side along both runs. The corner itself needs a stout post with bracing in two directions, since it holds tension from both lines. Driveways near the corner need clear sight lines for backing out, and fences near intersections can face height or setback limits. We confirm county permit and HOA requirements for your lot before a corner fence goes up.
Corner lots also take more abuse. Snowplows push slush into the low boards, school traffic near Broadneck High and the community college kicks up road grime, and cars cut the corner. We replace damaged low boards, add a rot board along the bottom where the design allows, and reset any post that has been knocked out of line.
Arnold Neighborhoods We Reach From Annapolis
Our Annapolis crew gets to Arnold across the Severn, over the Route 50 bridge or the Naval Academy Bridge, so the Broadneck is close to home. We work throughout Arnold: the neighborhoods off College Parkway, Bay Dale Drive, Arnold Road, St. Margarets Road and Jones Station Road, the homes along Ritchie Highway, and the wooded creek communities on both the Severn and Magothy sides.
The work changes with the ground. Near Route 2 and College Parkway, yards are smaller and most calls are for a six-foot privacy fence with a worn gate. Out toward the rivers, lots get bigger and more wooded, and storm limbs, wet posts and boat gates take over the list.
Next door, our crew also covers Cape St. Claire at the end of the peninsula and The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis for Severna Park to the north. If you are not sure whether your Arnold fence is worth saving, The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis will test every post and tell you plainly.
Nearby, Cape St. Claire is served by The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis, and Gibson Island is too, through The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis.

Stevensville fence servicesFence questions from Arnold homeowners
The double gate for my boat trailer in Arnold sags in the middle. Can it be fixed?
Yes, a sagging double gate for a boat trailer in Arnold can usually be fixed by resetting the hinge posts and bracing each leaf. When the two leaves stop meeting in the middle, the hinge posts have almost always leaned in toward the opening under the weight. We dig them out, reset them plumb in deeper concrete, and fit each leaf with a diagonal brace rising from the hinge side so it holds its shape. We also set a new drop rod receiver in concrete so the fixed leaf stays put.
A poplar limb fell on my Arnold fence. Should I pull it off myself?
No, you should not pull a large poplar limb off an Arnold fence yourself while the panel is bent under it. Bent rails and boards store energy and can spring back hard once the weight comes off. Take photos first, keep pets and kids away, and have a tree crew cut a large limb into sections. After the wood is clear, we replace snapped posts and broken rails, rebuild the panel to match the rest of the line, and push-test the posts on each side, since limb strikes often crack them too.
Can you put a fence near the top of the bank on my Severn River lot in Arnold?
Yes, we can build a fence near the top of the bank on a Severn River lot in Arnold, but we keep the posts back from the edge rather than right on it. We set the downhill posts deeper and route the line so water crosses it instead of running along it. Lots this close to the river may fall in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, so we check Critical Area status, the county permit and any HOA rules for the lot before staking it out.
Is the old chain link fence around my Arnold backyard worth repairing?
The old chain link fence around an Arnold backyard is usually worth repairing if the line posts are still solid at the ground. Most original chain link fails at the top rail sleeves, the wire ties and the tension bands long before the posts go. If they pass, we replace rusted top rail with new galvanized sections, renew the ties and bands, and stretch the fabric tight. If several posts have rusted through at grade, replacing the line makes more sense than patching it.
Which side of my corner-lot fence in Arnold should face the street?
The finished side of a corner-lot fence in Arnold should face both streets, with the posts and rails on the yard side of each run. That is the look most neighborhoods expect, and many HOAs on the Broadneck write it into their fence standards. The corner post carries tension from two directions, so we brace it both ways. Before a corner fence goes up, we confirm county permit and HOA requirements for your lot, including any height or setback limits near driveways and intersections.
Can my existing wood fence in Arnold be made taller for a dog that jumps?
Yes, an existing wood fence in Arnold can often be made taller for a jumping dog by extending the posts and adding a top section, as long as the posts are sound. We test each post at grade first, since a taller fence catches more wind and puts more load on the footings. If the posts are solid, we attach post extensions and add a lattice or board topper that matches the fence. If the posts are already soft, the better fix is new, longer posts set deeper.
What should I do with my fence while a tree is taken down in my Arnold yard?
While a tree is taken down in your Arnold yard, ask the tree crew to drop wood away from the fence and, if a section is in the fall zone, have it removed first and set back up after. We can take down a section of wood or chain link fence before the tree work and rebuild it once the stump is ground. After removal, check the posts nearest the old tree. Root decay can leave soft pockets that let posts lean months later.
How long does stain last on a shaded fence in Arnold?
Stain on a shaded fence in Arnold usually needs renewing sooner on the bottom third than on the top, because the base stays damp under the tree canopy long after rain. Leaves pile against the boards every fall and hold moisture through the winter. The signs it is time are water soaking in instead of beading, gray boards returning and green growth at the bottom. We wash off the mildew, let the wood dry fully, replace boards too soft to take finish, and apply a penetrating stain with extra coverage on the bottom edge.
Do you cover Arnold neighborhoods off Bay Dale Drive and St. Margarets Road?
Yes, our Annapolis crew covers the Arnold neighborhoods off Bay Dale Drive and St. Margarets Road, along with College Parkway, Arnold Road, Jones Station Road and the homes along Ritchie Highway. We also work the creek communities on the Severn and Magothy sides, including Pines on the Severn and Ulmstead. The jobs shift as you move toward the water, from standard backyard privacy fences near Route 2 to wooded, wetter lots with boat gates and storm limbs near the rivers.
Can you change my chain link fence in Arnold to wood privacy without moving the line?
Yes, we can change a chain link fence in Arnold to a wood privacy fence on the same line, but the chain link posts usually come out rather than staying. Chain link line posts are thin steel tubes set for light fabric, not for the wind load of a solid board fence. We remove the fabric, rails and posts, then set new wood posts in concrete on the same layout, keeping your existing gate locations unless you want them moved.
