Fishing Creek Lots and Fences Near the Bulkhead

Fishing Creek runs through the middle of Chesapeake Beach, lined with marinas, charter boats and homes with their own bulkheads and docks. On these lots the fence usually runs from the house down toward the water, and the last few posts end up close to the bulkhead.

That is where a fence job needs the most care. Many bulkheads are held up by tie-back rods and anchors buried in the yard behind the wall. A post hole dug in the wrong spot can strike one, and damaging the bulkhead's anchoring is a far bigger problem than a loose fence post. The soil right behind a bulkhead is also often fill that settles and stays wet.

Before digging near a bulkhead, we look for the anchor locations, probe the ground and hand dig the closest holes. We keep posts back from the wall rather than fastening a fence to the bulkhead itself. Posts in that wet fill get gravel bases and deeper footings, and hardware is stainless or hot-dipped galvanized for the salt air off the creek. The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis also checks the bottom of each post on these lots, since brackish water from high tides soaks the ground here more than anywhere else in town.

If your fence sits just over the line in North Beach, The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis covers it, and the same goes for Dunkirk with The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis.

Keeping the Bay View From the Hillside Streets

Chesapeake Beach rises fast behind the shoreline. A few blocks back from the water, streets climb into steep, wooded hills, and many homes up there were built to look out over the Bay. A tall privacy fence across the view side of one of those lots blocks exactly what the owner bought the house for.

On these lots the view side and the side yards usually want different fences. Black aluminum or a low picket across the downhill side keeps the view open and still keeps dogs and kids in. Solid wood or vinyl privacy panels go along the side lines where neighbors are close. Where the two meet, the transition has to be planned so the heights and posts line up cleanly.

Hilltop lots also catch more wind than the sheltered streets below, and an open fence handles that better than solid panels would. Steep grades mean most panels are stepped, so we set the post heights to keep the top line even and close the gaps at the bottom. The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis works out the layout with you before any holes are dug, and we confirm town, county permit, HOA and Critical Area requirements for the address.

Bluff-Top Lots and Eroding Edges

Along parts of the Chesapeake Beach shore, including the cliffs near Bayfront Park, land drops to the Bay along steep banks of sand and clay. Those bluffs erode. Storms and waves undercut the base, and the top edge gives way bit by bit. Homes set back from those edges often want a fence to keep children and pets away from the drop.

A fence too close to an eroding edge is a short-lived fence. As the ground falls away, the outer posts lose soil on the bluff side, tip outward and eventually go over the edge along with the bank. Water draining toward the edge speeds the process.

  • Look for cracks in the ground parallel to the bluff edge, which mark soil that is about to slump.
  • Check whether any posts have exposed concrete on the bluff side.
  • Notice where yard runoff heads toward the edge, since that is where erosion cuts fastest.

We set safety fences well back from the edge, on ground that is not cracking or slumping, and keep yard water from running along the fence line toward the bluff. Bluff-top work is close to tidal water by definition, so we check the Critical Area status for the property before anything goes in.

Storm Damage on Exposed Hills and Shoreline

Storms hit Chesapeake Beach from two directions at once. Along the shoreline and Fishing Creek, it is wind and high water. Up in the hills, it is wind gusting across exposed ridgelines and falling trees from the woods between the streets.

The damage looks different in each place. Shoreline fences show salt-soaked footings, scoured soil and panels pushed over by wind off the open Bay. Hillside fences show posts snapped at grade, limbs across the top rail and runoff that has cut under the bottom boards on the way downhill.

After a storm, we make the yard safe first: clearing broken sections and limbs, bracing leaning panels and closing gaps so pets stay in. The full rebuild follows once the ground firms up. Snapped posts get replaced in new concrete, scoured footings are dug out and reset, and broken boards are matched to the existing fence. The Fence Repair Guys of Annapolis then looks at why each run failed, so a rebuilt section on a windy ridge gets deeper posts or a more open design instead of the same setup that just blew down.

Chesapeake Beach Areas We Cover

Our Annapolis crew reaches Chesapeake Beach through South County and north Calvert, coming into town on MD-260, which ends at MD-261 near the water. We work along MD-261 through town, on the streets around Fishing Creek and its marinas, near the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum, on the lots near Bayfront Park and up through the hillside neighborhoods west of the shore.

The town began in the early 1900s as a resort served by its own railroad from Washington, and the streets show every era since then. Older homes near the water often have fences that have been patched many times. Newer homes on the hills tend to have vinyl, aluminum and pool fences that need hardware and gate work as they age.

The Fence Repair Guys have worked on fences in Anne Arundel County, Annapolis included, for about five years. Chesapeake Beach is inside the 20-mile service radius of our Annapolis shop, along with North Beach right next door and Owings and Dunkirk inland.

FAQ

Fence questions from Chesapeake Beach homeowners

Can you put fence posts near my bulkhead on Fishing Creek?

Yes, we can set fence posts near a bulkhead on Fishing Creek, but we keep them back from the wall and locate the bulkhead's buried tie-back anchors before digging. Those rods and anchors run into the yard behind the wall, and striking one can weaken the bulkhead. We probe the ground and hand dig the nearest holes. We do not fasten fences to the bulkhead itself. The soil behind the wall is often wet fill, so posts there get gravel bases and deeper footings.

What fence keeps the Bay view at my hillside house in Chesapeake Beach?

To keep the Bay view at a hillside house in Chesapeake Beach, use black aluminum or a low picket fence across the view side and save solid privacy panels for the side lines. Aluminum pickets are thin enough to look through from the house and still keep dogs and kids in. It also handles hilltop wind well because air passes through. We plan where the open and solid sections meet so the heights and posts line up, and step the panels on steep grades.

How far from the bluff edge should a fence go in Chesapeake Beach?

A fence near a bluff in Chesapeake Beach should go well back from the edge, on ground that shows no cracks or slumping, because the bank keeps eroding. There is no single safe number, since erosion rates vary by spot and by storm. We look for cracks running parallel to the edge, exposed soil and where yard water drains. Posts set too close lose soil on the bluff side and tip outward. Because these lots touch tidal water, we also check the Critical Area status.

My fence on the hill in Chesapeake Beach blew down in a storm. Why did it fail?

A fence on a hill in Chesapeake Beach usually blows down because exposed hilltop wind loaded solid panels on posts that were too shallow or too far apart. Gusts across ridgelines are stronger than on the sheltered streets below. Look at where posts snapped: breaks at the ground line point to rot or shallow setting. We rebuild those runs with deeper posts, closer spacing or a more open design such as shadowbox or aluminum, so the same section does not fail again.

Is a fence near Fishing Creek in the Critical Area?

A fence near Fishing Creek in Chesapeake Beach is likely close enough to tidal water to fall in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, but we confirm that for each address. The Critical Area has its own approvals separate from a standard permit, and the Town of Chesapeake Beach and Calvert County each have their own offices. We check the town, county permit, HOA and Critical Area requirements for your address before any work starts, then call Miss Utility to mark buried lines.

Why do my fence posts lean toward the creek in Chesapeake Beach?

Fence posts lean toward the creek in Chesapeake Beach because the ground near the water is softer and wetter, and lots slope down toward Fishing Creek. Posts on the low end settle into damp fill or lose soil when high tides and runoff scour around them. The pull of the rails then tips them downhill. We reset those posts deeper on gravel bases, replace any that have rotted at grade and add bracing on the end posts closest to the water.

What should I do first when a storm knocks my Chesapeake Beach fence down?

When a storm knocks a Chesapeake Beach fence down, first make the yard safe: keep people and pets away from broken boards, nails and any limbs still hanging overhead. Then close gaps so pets cannot get out, using temporary panels or bracing on leaning sections. Rinse metal parts that sat in salt water. Take photos of the damage for your records. Once the ground firms up, we replace snapped posts, reset scoured footings and match broken boards to the rest of the fence.

Can you repair the fence around my pool on the hill in Chesapeake Beach?

Yes, we repair pool fences on hillside lots in Chesapeake Beach, including leaning posts, stepped panels with gaps at the bottom and gates that no longer close and latch on their own. On sloped lots, settling soil can open a gap under a panel large enough for a small child, so we check the full perimeter. We adjust or replace self-closing hinges and self-latching hardware, reset any posts that moved and confirm the barrier requirements for your address before finishing.

Do older homes near the water in Chesapeake Beach need special fence work?

Older homes near the water in Chesapeake Beach often need fence work that untangles years of patching, plus hardware suited to salt air. We frequently find posts sistered beside rotted ones, mismatched boards and plain steel hinges rusting away. We remove failed posts and old footings completely, set new posts on gravel with crowned concrete and replace hardware with stainless or hot-dipped galvanized parts. Sound sections stay, and new boards are matched so the fence looks consistent from the street.

Do you cover both Chesapeake Beach and North Beach?

Yes, we cover both Chesapeake Beach and North Beach, which sit side by side along the Bay at the top of Calvert County. Both are inside the 20-mile service radius of our Annapolis shop. The work differs between them: Chesapeake Beach has more creek-side bulkhead lots on Fishing Creek and steep hillside streets, while North Beach is mostly narrow cottage lots on flatter, sandy ground. We often schedule jobs in both towns in one trip, since the crew is already on MD-261.
